CANONICAL AND NON-CANONICAL “CONTES” IN FRENCH POETRY OF THE XVIII TH CENTURY

Abstract.
The author considers the popular genre varieties of the French poetry of the XVIIIth century “conte” (le conte) according to canonicity or deviation from the canonicity, shows how the dominant genre purpose of entertainment, “amusement” leads to the profanation of moralistic poetry properties, in general terms emphasizes the place of “conte” among the factors creating the view of the culture in the XVIII th century as a whole, and introduces into domestic literary criticism circulation a number of texts representing the “mass production” of the genre (“contes” by J.-B. Junquières, Ch. Borde, etc.).
