Abstract.
The author describes one of the structural components of the text – “generalization” basing on the material of autobiographical trilogies of L. N. Tolstoi and M. Gor'kii, analyzes the types of “generalization”, its functioning, narrative evolution, aesthetic role and comparative significance, reveals the origins of “generalization”, ascertains the semantic role of this technique in Tolstoi’s trilogy, and asserts that Gor'kii is a successor of Tolstoi’s “generalization” and at the same time an innovator, filling the “generalizing” technique with new functions.
