Abstract.
The implementation of G. K. Zipf’s law in linguistics in the context of language means economy is considered. The author pays attention to the functional significance of abbreviations and acronyms in the English and German languages. The article mentions the topical in modern linguistics position of Zipf’s law on the principle of least effort as the main psychological basis for the explanation of such phenomena in the language as abbreviation and acronym.
