Abstract. The most important factor in the national research university development is its international activity that requires the active mastering of one or several foreign languages by the university staff. The task of developing the professional foreign language communicative competence is solved with the help of the language training system for the employees implemented at the Tomsk Polytechnic University. The discipline «Professional and Academic Writing» aims to develop the academic writing skills of the university staff that contributes to the enhancement of the quality of the academic publications and the publication activity in English of the research-pedagogical staff.
