GROTESQUE AND MODEL OF ABSURD REALITY IN THE STORY BY D. BARTHELME “THE SCHOOL”

Abstract.
The article analyzes the basic tendencies and approaches of modern literary criticism to the categorization and definition of the conception of “grotesque”. The author makes a comparison of grotesque and the related phenomenon of irony in the story by D. Barthelme “The School” from the collection “Sixty Stories”. The writer’s poetics is associated in the first place with using the methods of game and grotesque in the work of literature. The author traces the tendency of apocalyptic nature and absurdity of images and events created by the writer.
