Abstract. In the article D. Lessing's novel "The Fifth Child" (1988) is analyzed in correlation with European cultural tradition: literary, mythological and philosophical. As a result of the research the author comes to the conclusion that the problems of the novel are solved in the broad cultural context due to the use of the elements of mythopoetics which give multiple meaning, symbolism to the images, and parable nature to the form.
