Abstract. The article examines a sociolinguistic motivation as a basic driving force for changing sociolinguistic situation. Sociolinguistic motivation is considered as a set of relations to the language determining acceptability or unacceptability of both the subsystem itself and its elements depending on communicative situation. As an example the author uses the diachronic analysis of a linguistic situation in Canada, in particular, the specifics of a status of the marked units of the Canadian national variant of the English language.
