PERSONALITY OF NARRATOR AND RECONSTRUCTION OF PLOT IN THE NOVEL “THE DEVIL’S ELIXIR” BY E. T. A. HOFFMANN

Abstract.
The article uses a system of symbols to represent the narrative and event-trigger structure of the novel “The Devil’s Elixir” by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It is demonstrated how the reconstruction of the plot depends on assumptions about the identity of the narrator. It is shown that the text of the novel allows solving the question of the identity of the narrator in two ways. Accordingly, the plot of the novel can be reconstructed in two ways as well. The second reconstruction is less obvious and has not yet been analyzed by researchers, but from a logical point of view, neither of the two reconstructions can be preferred. It is suggested that the “ambiguity” of the plot is the part of the artistic conception.
