FUNCTIONS OF MYSTERY MOTIF IN CREATING IMAGE OF THE PAST IN THE NOVEL “SPIES” BY FRAYN MICHAEL

Abstract. The article considers the poetics of mystery motif in the novel “Spies” (2002) by the modern English writer Frayn Michael (1993). The various functions of mystery motif and the techniques of its manifestation are analyzed in the text. The plot-formative role of the motif is studied in detail. The features of its functions in the creation of the image of the past are emphasized. The sense-formative nature of the motif is revealed in the context of the novel problematics. This approach is first carried out in the analysis of the work in the Russian and foreign literary criticism.
