MOTIF OF TRANSITION IN “THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA” BY C. S. LEWIS

Abstract. This article is prepared within the framework of the dissertation research devoted to the problems of mythologism in the literature of the XIX-XX centuries. It considers one of the most important and complex literary phenomena - a motif. In this regard, theoretical interpretations of motif existing in literary criticism are analyzed. The topicality of the work is conditioned, above all, by the need to clarify and specify the definition of the motif in a modern scientific context, to expand the functional spheres of this phenomenon. By the material of “The Сhronicles of Narnia” by C. S. Lewis the authors analyze one of the most ancient mythological motifs - the motif of transition and its close connection with other common mythological motifs (escape, miraculous deliverance, initiation, etc.). In this case, an attempt is undertaken to determine the most important features of the transitions performed by the heroes in the plots of Lewis’s stories.
