ON THE PROBLEM OF SPECIFICS OF IMAGE OF CLERK-COPYIST IN WORKS BY N. V. GOGOL

Abstract.
The article examines the problem of the specifics of the image of the clerk-copyist in works by N. V. Gogol. Carrying on the tradition of studying the spiritual nature of this image in the writer’s works the author distinguishes the “internal nature” of the writing character, the sacral sphere of his activity. Special attention is paid to the fact that the very function of the scripter determines the “spiritual face” of Gogol’s clerk. The analysis of the narration of the stories “The Overcoat” and “Diary of a Madman” reveals two poles of the semantics of the process of writing: copying, preserving the sacral meaning of the character’s writing and the spiritual integrity of a person, and creative writing infecting the character with a mania for a rank, pride destroying his spiritual world.
