Abstract.
The article is devoted to investigating semantics and functions of phraseological units in a certain work of literature, where, as it is known, expressive features of this linguistic unit are manifested most clearly. In this connection the author examines one of the important functions of phraseological units in the novel by D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak “The Privalov Fortune” - characterological; the researcher analyzes participation of phraseological units in image development, formation of speech characteristic of the personages.
