Abstract. In the article by the example of the English phonemic fund the essence of phonological lacunae is analyzed. It is proved that not all phonemes of other languages which do not have direct equivalents in English are lacunar for the English language. The way of lacunae detection in the phonemic fund is described. The arguments for intra-lingual interpretation of lacunae are given. The absence of causal connection between a phonological lacuna in the English language and the availability of a phoneme with no direct equivalents in other languages is shown.
