Abstract. The article by the material of the Byzantine Lives of John Chrysostom of the VII-X centuries, first introduced in the scientific circulation of domestic Byzantine studies, researches the actual problem of the correlation between the historical and literary elements in the text of the hagiographic work. The author concludes that there was a shift from historicism toward didacticism and plot narrative in the Lives of John Chrysostom of the VII-X centuries, as compared to the hagiographic works of the beginning of the V century.
