THE MEANING OF THE ANCIENT ROOT ЙОҤ= IN THE LANGUAGE OF THE TUNDRA YUKAGIRS

Abstract.
The structural-morphological, word-formative and semantic analysis of the common noun йоҕул : 1) “nose”; 2) “beak” in comparison with the words йоҥйадир “loon” (literally: “white-billed”) and Йөҥтэгэ - the name of the hilly promontory in the Bolshaya Chukochya River (literally: “Big nose” or “Holy nose”) ⎼ shows that they have the same root йоҥ= which means: 1) “nose”; 2) “beak”. The comparative analysis of these words with the other verbal stems with йоҥ= , in particular йоҥнэ= “to be open” and йоҥоньэ= “to be evil, angry”, allows drawing the conclusion about the direct relation of the ancient root йоҥ= with the meanings “open” and “evil, angry”.
