THE STORY OF CAIN AND ABEL IN THE ENGLISH ROMANTIC DRAMATURGY OF THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE XIX CENTURY

Abstract. The article is devoted to the story of Cain and Abel in the interpretations of some of the English romanticists (S. T. Coleridge, W. Wordsworth, G. G. Byron). The author focuses on investigating the reasons for the relevancy of a Biblical legend on the first fratricide in the English romantic literature in the context of national literary tradition and European general cultural processes of the new epoch associated with the desacralization of Bible and formation of naturalistic picture of the world.
