Abstract. The article examines the cycle by V. G. Korolenko “The History of My Contemporary” in connection with the evolution of the Russian artistic autobiography. The author refers this piece of literature to the so called “social and event-trigger” branch of the Russian autobiographical prose. “The History of My Contemporar y” is a kind of transitional stage from the classical autobiography to the autobiography of a new type. Adopting “the lessons” by L. Tolstoy and A. I. Herzen, V. G. Korolenko develops “ideological structure” of the author’s original biography, makes an original contribution into the formation of Russian autobiographical genre on the whole.
