Abstract.
Greece had always had a special place in the life and writings of the British writer Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990). Durrell’s Greek travelogues gave the readers a chance to see another dimension of his writing. The established novelist Lawrence Durrell revealed his talent of an observant and witty traveler, and proved to be a true philhellinist. The interest in Greece and the legacy of Ancient Greece varied in different periods in history. Different aspects of Greek life and culture were the centre of scholarly attention. By the middle of the 20th century a new kind of philhellenism, with a special focus on contemporary Greece and its culture developed in England. In his travel books Durrell tried to understand the phenomenon of Greece, its nature and culture.
