LITERARY COLUMN OF WILLIAM DEAN HOWELLS IN LARGE-VOLUME MAGAZINE OF THE END OF THE XIX CENTURY

Abstract. The article is devoted to the American writer William Dean Howells, to the personality who was at the epicenter of the American society of the XIX century for a long time. His column “Editor’s Study” was the peak of not only publicistic but also literary heritage of the American author. The coverage of themes and issues of the literary life of the second half of the ХIХ century in this column is one of the most interesting pages in the American journalism history of the XIX century. The article considers the questions of moral and ethical character, raised in the column by W. D. Howells, which even today remain relevant.
