Abstract.
The main content of the article is the research of one of the most difficult lexical phenomena of the English language - polysemy. The article examines the cases of the use of the polysemy of words to understand the phenomenon of polysemy as itself, and also to try to follow the ways of its development as carefully as possible. In the paper two main ways of development of the multiple meaning are studied and analyzed.
