UTILITARIAN FUNCTIONS OF LANGUAGE AS A TOOL OF SOCIAL CONTROL IN THE RHETORICAL WORKS OF CICERO

Denis Andreevich Fedorov

Submitted: June 20, 2015
Abstract. The article deals with a number of rather little-studied aspects of proto-linguistic views of the outstanding representative of the ancient rhetoric Cicero. The author emphasizes the purely utilitarian character of judgments about language expressed by the considered thinker. Special attention is paid to the views of Cicero about the language teaching, the problems of “purity of language”, as well as the linguistic norms and anomalies. The conclusions are of interest for the researchers in the field of ancient linguistic teachings.
