Abstract.
The article examines the evolution of the mytho-poetical image of a ship in the literature of the Age of Enlightenment by the material of the novel by D. Defoe “Adventures of Robinson Crusoe”. The paper aims to analyze the basic meanings of a ship image in the context of Defoe’s work in particular and in the culture of the eighteenth century on the whole. The research findings involve identifying the symbolic content of the mytho-poetical image of a ship in Defoe’s literary work. The originality of the research is associated with the attempt to analyze the syncretic image of a ship created by the English writer in the context of global study of the ship image as a component of a triad of the universal mytho-poetical images.
