TUSCAN DIALECT AS A BASIS OF ITALIAN LITERARY LANGUAGE: HISTORY AND MODERNITY

Abstract.
The article tries to answer the question: “Why Florence is considered as a motherland of Italian literary language, and Tuscan (Florentine) dialect - as its basis?” To answer this question the author analyzes the basic landmarks of the Italian language history from the VIII century up to now, mentions the most prominent figures of culture, literature, policy and the linguists who played a crucial role in the formation of a language. The paper touches on the problem of the modern Florentine dialect status and describes its basic phonetic, morphological and lexical peculiarities in comparison with the literary language.
