Abstract.
The article discovers the origins of A. N. Ostrovsky’s dramaturgy - the writer’s techniques to explore the Russian social reality; the results of such exploration served as a basis of his creative work. The paper emphasizes the close relation of the dramatist’s ethnographic studies with the activity of the most outstanding representatives of the Russian historical and philological science.
