Abstract. Along with the word formation borrowing is one of the basic means to replenish the vocabulary of a language. The article focuses on the qualification of the certain lexical units. In some cases it’s difficult to decide whether the word is borrowed or formed from the Greek-Latin elements within the language. The paper examines Latin borrowings at the different language levels: words, word combinations, word-formative affixes and phrases-sentences. The special attention is paid to the so called twin words which do not observe the linguistic norms of the Russian language. Culturological material is represented by the Latin winged expressions - calques. Latin language was and remains one of the basic sources of borrowing for many modern languages.
