THE ETYMOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ENGLISH PHRASEOLOGICAL UNIT «ROB PETER TO PAY PAUL»

Abstract.
The article discusses the etymology of the English phraseological unit «Rob Peter to Pay Paul». Idioms and phraseological units, as it is known, reflect the centuries-old history of any language and its speakers. The author tries to find out how this idiom in the sense "to solve one problem at the expense of the aggravation of another one" received several variants of its interpretation in English and whether it is related to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul. Particular attention is paid to the consideration of other semantic elements that are steadily linked to the basic meaning of phraseological unit.
