COLLOQUIAL VOCABULARY IN CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH POETIC TEXTS

Abstract.
This article briefly describes the history of the poetic language, and on its basis the author studies colloquial vocabulary in contemporary poetic descriptions, which exclude the use of monologic/dialogic speech. Verses are classified as “neutral” and “colloquial” according to the criterion of the presence of colloquial lexical units in them, and “colloquial” verses are further divided into “rich” and “non-rich” according to the quantity and quality of colloquial words. As a result of the lexical and stylistic analysis of the poetic language of the verses the author reveals that most of them contain either neutral vocabulary or bookish vocabulary including poeticisms. A smaller part contains colloquial words. They create a high emotional tone of the text and expression thus justifying their presence in poetic description. The researcher notes that a strong tendency of increase in the number of verses with colloquial vocabulary that enhances the poetic level of literary works is taking shape.
