Abstract.
The article discusses the film adaptation theory and problems arising while transferring a literary work on the screen. The authors examine the film adaptations of the story by E. Hemingway “The Old Man and the Sea” relying on criticism and works by George Bluestone, Candace Ursula Grissom and Thomas Leitch devoted to the movie adaptation theory. Subsequently on the basis of the comparative analysis of film adaptation the researchers identify the main principles, the problems of movie adaptation and a “formula to create an ideal screen version”.
