Abstract. The article examines one of the most relevant problems of origin and formation of North Caucasian literatures in the second half of the XIX century. The study aims to discover how the artistic and esthetic peculiarities of North Caucasian essay promoted the formation of young mountain prose, helped to enrich genre nature of a story in the regional literature. For the first time in the North Caucasian literary criticism the peculiarities of transforming the essay genre into the story genre are analyzed, and therein lies the scientific originality of the paper. The paper promotes the further studies in the sphere of origin and formation of mountain literatures, in the sphere of North Caucasian literature genre system genesis and therein lies the theoretical and practical importance of the research.
