Abstract.
The article examines the structure of the concept “Intellectuals”, analyzes some means to verbalize this concept in the Russian language at the near periphery level, discovers the specifics of its representation in A. P. Chekhov’s original worldview, identifies the synonymous and antonymous lexemes predetermining the usage context. The paper also considers author’s intonation and the possible transformation of the basic lexeme meaning in the context of the whole literary text.
