BILINGUALISM: PROBLEMS OF DEFINITION

Abstract.
The article reveals the most topical issue of the language contacts theory: the complexity of defining the notion “bilingualism”. Several common definitions of bilingualism (and the criterion of determining bilingualism) stated in works of the leading Russian and foreign scientists are presented. A comparative analysis of these definitions and a brief overview of the key notions are carried out. The most appropriate definition of bilingualism is specified, and research prospects are outlined.
