Abstract.
The article provides the analysis of authority vocabulary in Indo-European languages considering the implemented conceptions of nature and essence of power. The words designating the ruler in ancient Greek, Latin, Celtic, Baltic and Slavonic languages served as the material for research. The mentioned lexical units are examined from the viewpoint of etymology and word-formation, the inner form of the words is also under analysis, that is, the author tries to clarify why the certain social phenomenon of ancient society acquires the certain name. Moreover, the conducted analysis allows the author to make conclusions regarding the social relations within the ancient society on the whole.
