TRANSLATION AS A TOOL FOR EVALUATION OF THE DEGREE OF PERCEPTION OF THE CATEGORY “UNDERSTATEMENT”

Abstract.
National standards of behaviour of a particular ethnic group are determined by the specificity of mentality and cultural values, the thing that in one culture is a communication standard can be inadmissable in another culture. So, in the British ethno-socium it is common to distance an interlocutor, to hide one’s true feelings and thoughts, keep back or diminish the impact on the interlocutor, which is manifested in the modal category “understatement”. In this paper the author attempts to evaluate the perception of this category by the representatives of the German and the Russian linguistic cultures, which became possible thanks to the translation of the original statements in German and Russian.
