Abstract.
The article is devoted to the study of the functioning of memes in the Internet communication in the English, Russian and Chechen languages. The main features, characteristics and types of memes are examined. The author also refers to the problem of the origin of the memes and the mechanism for their dissemination. The author explores popular English, Russian and Chechen memes with the aim to identify common and differentiating features. Finally the paper summarizes, emphasizes the universality of memes as carriers of cultural information that can be decoded by speakers of different languages.
