Abstract. The article analyzes the linguistic-cultural semiotic signs of John Fowles’s metatext. The semantic field “odyssey” (“way”, “initiation”) becomes dominant for the whole metatext, combining multiple narrative and semantic lines. The motive of odyssey-travel is supplemented and actualized by the leitmotif “mythologeme of mountain”, climbing which is another step in the initiation of the lexical-semiotic, symbolic and composition text system for the characters and readers.
