Abstract.
This paper is an attempt at describing a group of Japanese adverbs conveying superlative meaning standing out from a multiple background, as a field of synonyms. Using corpus data to specify the modes of their usage, we explain the pragmatic potential of lexemes, apparently a major distinctive feature, through a linkage with their internal semantics and etymology.
