OLFACTORY PHENOMENA IN F. M. DOSTOEVSKY’S WORKS

Abstract.
The article examines the basic conceptions of literary works’ olfactory poetics. By the example of the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky “Crime and Punishment” the authors provide a detailed analysis of olfactory phenomena within a certain literary text. The scents are interpreted as a system included into the literary work at all levels. It is shown how through the scents Rodion Raskolnikov, the main personage of the novel, adopted the surrounding world dividing it into the native and alien. The paper identifies developmental dynamics of olfactory phenomena in the novel and compares the personages through their scent perception.
