Abstract. This article is dedicated to the analyses of the narration of Paul Auster’s postmodern novel “The New York Trilogy”. First of all, general and theoretical principles of the classical, modernist and postmodernist narration are presented in the current scientific paper. Since P. Auster is the representative of American postmodernist literature, his trilogy is being analyzed in comparison with the modernist trilogy of famous Irish writer S. Beckett. One of the fundamental elements of postmodern narration - metafiction - is examined in the writer's work - “The New York Trilogy”.
