PSYCHOLOGICAL PORTRAIT OF CIRCASSIAN GIRL IN THE POEM BY M. Yu. LERMONTOV “THE PRISONER OF THE CAUCASUS”

Abstract.
The study introduces modern interpretation of M. Yu. Lermontov’s early poem which is associated with Pushkin’s tradition and presents psychologically coherent and perfect image of a mountain woman. The author analyzes in detail the place of this heroine in personage system, her role in storyline and composition of a romantic poem. The paper identifies the meaning and importance of this image, discovers ideological-artistic and esthetic aspects of “mountain maiden” phenomenon. M. Yu. Lermontov’s poem is examined in the context of Russian and foreign romantic tradition. The author draws parallels with A. S. Pushkin’s, G. G. Byron’s creative work, considers the influence of these writers on the poetics of the poem. Text analysis is implemented at the deep meaningful level; it considers both the evolution of M. Yu. Lermontov’s creative work and the literary process of his epoch.
