TEMPORAL AND REFERENTIAL MEANING OF THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract. In this article the author discusses the functioning of the English tense Past Continuous in the narrative framework of the text and in direct speech. An analysis of the system meaning of the Past Continuous form, its use in the transposition function and in the macro context is carried out. The article reveals the content of the notion of verbal reference and referential point. In conclusion, the idea is expressed that the form of Past Continuous manifests temporal polyvalence in speech.
