Abstract.
The article is devoted to the genre of an essay in A. A. Delvig and A. S. Pushkin’s “Literaturnaya Gazeta” in 1830-1831, which combined the value of the document of the epoch with the assessments of contemporaries. Two historical essays written by V. G. Teplyakov with the general title “Letters from Varna”, which reflect the considerable interest of the Russian society to military operations in the Balkans, are considered in detail and serve as an important primary source of historical information during this period.
