Abstract. The article examines the issue of identifying the specifics of linguodidactics as a special discipline in the scientific work of the English-speaking researchers. The history of linguodidactics is analyzed from the point of view of its origin, revealing the basic notions and the subject of the study. The authors substantiate the thesis that most Western linguists consider linguodidactics as a branch of applied linguistics.
