Abstract.
The article considers colour characteristics of geographical names as the important elements of the Avar toponymics. The authors analyze different views on the nature of a toponym colour element, evaluate the role of colour characteristics in the process of forming the Avar toponymical worldview, and identify the peculiarities of formation and functioning of toponyms with a colour component. The paper concludes on objective representation of spatial features in toponyms and on idio-ethnic specificity of colour representation in the national language.
