ON MECHANISMS OF DENOTATION REPRESENTATION IN THE RIDDLE

Abstract.
The purpose of the article is to identify and systematize the most frequent structural schemes of a folk riddle by the material of the Russian and English languages. The research is carried out within the framework of a semantic-syntactic analysis of folklore texts. It is established that the structures oriented to the representation of the denotation action are the most frequent. Such structures may contain the name of a single action or a whole series of actions typical of the desired subject of an action. Often the enumeration of actions is conditioned by the desire to detect their contradictory nature. Less commonly, the denotation is described by reference to its characteristic or the enumeration of its constituent parts. The analysis allows us to talk about the partial similarity of the process of the object perception and its subsequent encoding within the framework of the English and Russian folk riddles.
