Abstract. The article makes an attempt to identify the national and cultural features of the concept HUMAN CHARACTER by the material of the English phraseological units (idioms and proverbs) with components - nominations of animals. The notion HUMAN CHARACTER is defined from the point of view of psychology. The results of the functional and semantic analysis of the studied phraseological units and proverbs are presented. On the basis of the obtained data, the author models and describes the mechanism for conceptualizing human character in the English phraseological world view.
