Abstract.
The article considers the manipulative strategy of discredit in the British mass media because the mass media are the basic communicative space, in which verbal manipulation takes place. Though they are not an exclusive sphere of verbal manipulation they largely surpass any other spheres of information circulation in the number of one-time recipients of certain verbal influence. The paper analyzes the basic tactics of the discredit strategy: accusation, impersonal accusation, denunciation, insult and threat. The conclusions are justified by the examples taken from the British periodicals “The Independent” and “The Guardian”. All the analyzed publications consider the issue of Great Britain’s attitude towards Russia.
