IDEOLOGICAL AND ARTISTIC PECULIARITIES OF F. M. KLINGER’S NOVEL “ORPHEUS” IN THE CONTEXT OF THE EUROPEAN LITERATURE OF THE XVIII CENTURY

Abstract.
The article is devoted to F. M. Klinger’s novel “Orpheus” (1778-80), which is almost forgotten nowadays, its place in the writer’s works and the European literature of that period. The similarity of the novel to other works of the contemporary German and European literature can be traced. It is concluded that the novel is one of the important milestones in the gradual transition of its author from the aesthetics of “Sturm und Drang” (“Storm and Drive”) to the late Enlightenment and combines the features of sentimentalism, rococo and educational satire. As a typical example of the latter, the comedy “The Prince of the Silk Worm, the Reformer, and the Crown Seekers”, included in Part V of the novel, is considered.
