EARTHY AND CELESTIAL LOVE IN THE SONNET CYCLE “MONNA INNOMINATA” BY C. G. ROSSETTI

Abstract.
The sonnet cycle “Monna Innominata” is analyzed in the context of C. G. Rossetti’s creative work, considering the problem of the correlation of earthy and celestial love, which is the key one in her amorous lyrics. In C. G. Rossetti’s creative work Pre-Raphaelite principles are in tune with her deep religiousness, dedication to Tractarianism and its esthetical conceptions. First of all, it refers to the “modest reserve” principle, which forbids the poet to express the feelings explicitly, it explains the mysteriousness of the poetess’s works. “Monna Innominata” manifests Rossetti’s dedication to Dante’s philosophy and serves as her response to “Sonnets from the Portuguese” by E. Barrett Browning.
