Abstract.
The article discusses the originality of historical prose, highlights a special type of literary works, which are based on the philosophical approach to depicting the historical past. In such works, history is viewed from ontological positions, and the author faces a more difficult objective - to reveal the universal laws of the development of history and society. Among the representatives of the Russian literature, the similar historiosophical view on history is most consistently embodied in the works of D. S. Merezhkovsky and I. M. Efimov. The peculiarity of worldview and the created picture of reality are considered in the article in terms of identifying the traditional and new methodology for describing and understanding the past.
