Abstract.
The article studies the creative work of the famous Ossetian writer and enlightener Inal Kanukov, who was at the forefront of the advanced social thought of Ossetia in the early 70s of the XIX century. The paper identifies and reveals the key problems and features of his work. The main content of the paper is the analysis of the writer’s essays. Basing on the research, the author concludes that Kanukov made a significant contribution to the study of the ethnography, culture of the Ossetian people, promoted their rapprochement with the Russian people; being a patriot and a democrat, he defended the working masses’ interests; led active struggle against harmful customs and traditions.
